Review

“Our kids now have access to more information than ever before, including objections to Christianity and the existence of God. Young people encounter skepticism long before they enter universities and colleges. They encounter it online while they are still living at home. That’s why we, as parents, are the most important apologists our kids will ever know. Mama Bear Apologetics will help you understand the challenges so you can navigate your kids’ questions and prepare them to become committed Christ followers.”
J. Warner Wallace, adjunct professor of apologetics at Biola University and author of Cold-Case Christianity, God’s Crime Scene, and Forensic Faith

Mama Bear Apologetics is an incisive and witty look at the false ideas kids are drowning in today, often under the watch of well-meaning but unaware Christian moms. I love that it cuts right to the heart of the problem in each chapter—just enough information to provide helpful context and key points of understanding, but not so much that it will leave you feeling overwhelmed. If every Christian mom would read and thoughtfully apply this book in her parenting, it would profoundly transform the next generation. Please read this, then share it with a friend.”
Natasha Crain, national speaker, blogger, and author of Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side and Talking with Your Kids about God

“I’m thrilled to see a book of this caliber written for moms! Mama Bear Apologetics is engaging and accessible without minimizing the seriousness of the subject matter. I’m particularly pleased by the inclusion of chapters on so-called progressive Christianity and postmodernism. Readers will gain effective tools for dismantling some of the more dangerous ideologies that pervade contemporary culture—and be able to equip their children to follow suit.”
—Melissa Cain Travis, PhD, author of Science and the Mind of the Maker: What the Conversation Between Faith and Science Reveals About God

“Outstanding! Mama Bear Apologetics deftly describes cultural lies, how to recognize them, and how to defeat them logically and compassionately. Humor abounds, such as their chew-and-spit method of discerning where progressivism, feminism, socialism, and more agree with or go astray from biblical teaching. Chapters end with discussion questions perfect for small group settings.”
—Jean E. Jones, coauthor of Discovering Joy in Philippians and Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament

“This team of women thinkers, under the leadership of Hillary Morgan Ferrer, has put together one of the most engaging, accessible, clever, and relevant books on apologetics available today. They take on and answer the questions that intimidate Christian parents—and they do it with joy, humor, and rare skill. This is the kind of book that should be ordered by churches in case lots so that everyone can read it and discuss it. This book will surely be a confidence builder and a game changer for Christian families far and wide.”
—Craig J. Hazen, PhD, Biola University Apologetics, author of Fearless Prayer

“Brilliant, humorous, conversational, must-read book about the importance of apologetics for anyone who gives a hoot about the current and next generations. This fresh perspective—by women—is exactly what apologetics needs. Everyone, not just parents, needs to learn the chew-and-spit method of discernment, how to ROAR like a mother, and grasp the consequences of linguistic theft. The Mama Bear clarion call is providential—‘Mess with our kids, and we will demolish your arguments!"
—Laurie A. Stewart, president of Women in Apologetics

Mama Bear Apologetics is a brilliant collaboration for every woman concerned about lies and ideologies that have crept into both society and the church—and have come against the knowledge of God. It’s for those mothers who want to protect the minds and souls of their children. Mama Bear will equip you with the answers to the tough questions, engage you and your children’s critical thinking, and encourage you—through prayer and discussion—on your faith journey.  This book will inspire and strengthen your family and I highly recommend it for every home, in small groups, and in your church.”
—Rodney Lake, National Director of Thinking Matters New Zealand Foundation

“The Mama Bear book bounds onto the apologetics scene coming to the aid of Christian moms navigating the swift-moving—and often dangerous—ideological waters of postmodern Western culture. These authors understand that while moms have difficulty finding time to learn apologetics, they are still concerned about what their kids are ingesting from cultural influencers. So the Mama Bears have provided answers at an accessible level using stories and humor for an experience that is as informative as it is enjoyable, all the while maintaining a loving and compassionate approach to tough issues. This book will have Christian moms ready to ‘ROAR like a mother’!”
—Mary Jo Sharp, assistant professor of apologetics, Houston Baptist University; director of Confident Christianity Apologetics Ministry

I took some time to read the negative reviews and I can’t seem to understand the basis for the bad reviews. The authors of this book encourage parents to do the opposite of what the critics are accusing them of, which is isolate themself from differing views. If anything, they encourage the reader to immerse themself in an environment where their Christian views will be challenged, because this is the world in which we live. In no way are any of these authors hateful, bigoted, or intolerant of people with differing world views. They build up the reader and give them confidence to NOT live in fear of our beliefs coming under attack but instead be prepared for the day when that inevitably occurs. This book calms the Christian with hopes of being able to isolate our children and shelter them from world views and empowers them to answer hard questions and to do it with love and confidence. Truly one of the most inspiring books I’ve read and has me fascinated with apologetics now. I feel better prepared to give my children a strong foundation. After reading this book, I told my husband that I’m ready to choose an end date for homeschooling and private school and allow our kids to enter the world where their beliefs will be apart of the counter culture. So truly, if this book does anything, it prepares you to accept the world around you with confidence and grace. Not fear inducing at all. So excited to have come across this book and their podcast.

Disappointingly politically-influenced theology with an aggressive stance.

As a Christian, I often have questions about my faith and how I should approach cultural ideas. I read this book hoping it would address modern topics and help me also think about how to thoughtfully talk with my kids. But instead of diving into why people believe things and how that reveals a deeper desire that only God can fill, the authors take an aggressive ‘the liberal agenda is out there to get your kids!’ tone. It’s very us-vs-them. The authors assume you agree with them (Socialism, Feminism, linguistic theft—bad!) and you need to protect your kids from these ideas with a slaying quip. But there’s no Biblical reason given to justify their premises. Their positions seem more rooted in modern American cultural Christianity than Biblical text. For example, one author seems terrified that Bernie Sanders could even be considered a viable candidate in modern American politics, as it indicates that our foundation of God-honoring social structures are crumbling. She writes that Socialism wants to destroy “the old guard” of leaders within Capitalism (she assumes you believe that Capitalism is good, but again—no Biblical reason). Um... “drain the swamp!”??? Same premise, opposite team. If you’re going to pick apart politics, see the flaw in both sides or else don’t claim to be apolitical. The authors label Social Justice movements as a sneaky cover for Marxist ideas and fighting for more equitable wages is somehow unfair to those who are wealthier. There’s plenty of theological topics in this book that I think they accurately explore, but again—those have a Biblical foundation. The political topics lack Biblical foundations and are obviously more aligned with party thinking. The answer to the flaws in Marxism isn’t Capitalism, it’s the hope that God will one day restore His creation with perfect justice. The answer to feminism isn’t patriarchy, it’s the comforting truth that our Father is good and loving and made men and women in His image.

I was raised Christian in the 90’s where the rally cry was that the church was being attacked by liberal-agenda media. We “needed” to be equipped with facts to retort. Treating non-believers as sly Jesus-haters to be defeated was why I nearly left the church. Church felt political and that wasn’t attractive. That perspective, also found in this book, doesn’t leave any room for people like me who may have different political beliefs but still believes in the preeminence of God and the saving work of Jesus. God is neither a Socialist nor Capitalist—we are broken people trying to create social structures with an inherent longing for the peace and equality of the Kingdom of God. I wish this book pointed more to God as our ultimate answer and less to Western society in the 50’s.

If you''re a Christian parent, you want to raise your children to know and love the Lord, but there is no one sure-fired 100% way to parent that brings kids to Jesus. But we can make sure to point the way to a faith built on the solid foundation of truth. And Mama Bear Apologetics gives us the tools to build that foundation.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is, "Blind faith is easy to lose. Faith grounded in evidence is harder to walk away from." - Hillary Morgan Ferrer. So how do we give our kids that kind of foundation? You could spend years studying apologetics or you can start with this book.

Mama Bear Apologetics is like a cheat sheet for all the important concepts we need to know as parents to teach our children why we believe that Christianity is more than a good idea, it''s the truth. Each of the authors writes with authority, but in a conversational tone that makes you feel like you could be sitting around the playground chatting.

Each chapter walks you through the way the world twists the truth or subverts Gods'' word and offers real ways to clarify our thinking and think critically about the issues. And this book is written by busy moms for busy moms! Mama Bear Apologetics gets to the heart of each issue quickly and gives you easy answers to deal with each type of objection. I really appreciate the end of each chapter walks you through a concrete way to handle each subject. I love learning, but if I don''t have a concrete take-away, sometimes what I''ve read doesn''t stick. MBA makes sure you know how to use each concept to solidify not only the faith of your children, but your own, and give you the confidence to share your faith with the people you encounter in your daily life.

Every chapter is so good, you won''t want to put it down. But I really appreciated the chapter on Linguistic Theft. I know that words are being misappropriated, but since reading that chapter, I''ve started seeing just how many words aren''t being used authentically and how that shapes our thought processes.

The chapters on naturalism, truth, evidence, and relativism are really excellent. I love how the authors take concepts that we''ve heard so often, we''ve internalized them without realizing it and show us how flawed they are. Kids are walking away from faith in larger numbers than ever because they don''t know how faulty these ''great sound bite'' ideas really are. But MBA exposes the flaws in their logic.

While MBA covers just about every main objection to Christianity and explains many contradictory worldviews, we can teach our kids HOW to think critically using the skills outlined in this book even when confronted with an argument that wasn''t specifically covered because they covered how to discern the message and measure it against truth and logic. We don''t have to leave our brains at the door to be Christians. In fact, we need to use them now more than ever.

One chapter that was particularly important as the mother of a young girl is the one on toxic feminism. I want my daughter to see herself correctly as an image bearer of God created in His likeness, loved and cherished deeply. But I don''t want her to fall victim to the viciousness passing as the "pro-women movement". MBA helps us see the beauty in being women without feeling like we have to go to war against men. The book dispels the clear contradictory messages in third wave feminism that are actually damaging to women and families. And challenges us as a body of Christ to do better in how we protect women.

MBA ends with a chapter full of ways to use all this information to make a difference for the next generation.

I really can''t recommend this book enough. The wisdom and knowledge of the various authors is astounding. The years of their experience and educational background is a treasure trove that we get to ravage to contend for the faith of our children. Every Christian should read this book, but especially parents ready to Roar like a Mama Bear for the faith of their children.

I received a copy from the publisher to review, but also purchased an additional copy because I think this book is that important!

A group I''m in selected this book to read. It strikes me as being fear based. Out of fear that our children will interact with people of other faiths and other political paradigms (sadly, this author seems to confuse being a Christian with being a conservative, Evangelical Republican), this author strives to have ready-made arguments to shoot down any other ideas.

The author states that this is necessary to ensure our children don''t lose their faith.

I know teens and adults who have left the Christian faith. Many of them came from conservative Evangelical families like the one the author seems to have. Having an answer for everything doesn''t ensure your child will follow in your faith, as the author claims. The author claims that children raised in a home of liberal of progressive Christianity are likely to leave the faith. The author backs this up only with anecdotes. Personally knowing young adults who have been completely turned off by conservative Evangelicalism, I know it''s not straightforward the way the author claims.

Also, the author''s way of interacting with people of different beliefs, whether it be different denominations of Christianity, different faiths, or different political parties, is very off-putting. Her goal is to "lovingly" show them that they''re wrong. Her goal is not to serve the needy, feed the hungry, clothe the naked. Her goal is to have the last word and be right.

I cannot imagine a more off-putting presentation of Jesus than this.

I’m close to finishing this book and loving it so far! It’s loaded with solid, factual information without feeling too academic. If you’re a podcast listener, you’ll recognize some of the stories in the book and the voice will feel familiar to you. (The podcast is excellent too, BTW).

After introducing the reader to why apologetics are needed and the method for teaching to children, the book covers all of the “isms” (naturalism, moral relativism, skepticism - to name a few). Each “ism” is covered by discussing its history, the good and bad that came from it, and then applies the ROAR method of discernment to help our kids learn to “chew and spit” on their own when they are presented with unbiblical world views.

I implore every Christian mom to READ THIS BOOK! 🙏 My boys are 4 & 6 and we aren’t wasting a moment. Start now and teach your kids to think critically and Biblically so their faith will stand through the challenging years of high school and college when Mama Bear can’t be there to help process false ideas.

I am a Papa Bear privileged to be part of Mama Bear Apologetics Launch Team. I have been involved in Christian Apologetics since 2008 and hold a Master of Divinity from Liberty University. I am currently working toward my Master of Theology in Christian Theology, also at Liberty University. I have read many books on Philosophy, Theology and Apologetics and I got to say this is the most unique book I''ve read on the topic by far.

Most Apologetics books deal with abstract concepts like the existence of God, objective morality, the Resurrection of Christ, etc., and do so on a academic, technical level. This is not a bad thing as it is much needed. However, Hilary and her gang of Mama Bears really fill a void in meeting a specific demographic - mothers and or woman who care about children in general - on a sophisticated level but in a practical and realistic way. They don''t just deal with far off concepts with a bunch of academic jargon. They take these difficult matters and put them in a simple and understandable way. That is not easy to do and I applaud the authors for this often daunting achievement.

Some of the cool topics they discuss that you will not likely find in your standard Apologetic text are subjects like, Linguistic Theft (such as: Love, Truth, Tolerance and Justice) and how they have been obscured (stolen) from their actual meaning; Self-Helpism; Skepticism; Emotionalism; Marxism; New Spirituality; Feminism; and Progressive Christianity. These topics are topics we will certainly face everyday as we combat cultural shifts into moral relativism (and other nasty ideas) where we may not face complex questions like Causality and the Existence of God or the intricacies of mechanisms in Naturalism or Intelligent Design (though they are addressed in this book to a more basic degree). This is what makes this book so important. It empowers Mama Bears to gain a better understanding of what is happening in our society and how to address them through knowledge. Moreover, how to help your kids understand the lies so they can spot them on their own, using their own ability to think and discern (known as the Chew-and-spit method) - Thanks to Mama Bear!

Another cool feature is the layout of the book. Each Chapter is unique in its own topics but the authors follow a general format using the ROAR acronym; R-recognize the message, O-offer Discernment, A-argue for a healthier approach, R-Reinforce through discussion, discipleship, and prayer. Each section concludes with a PAWS for Prayer and Discussion Questions. So this is an engaging book that also fosters relationship building with your child. It encourages Mama Bears to actually engage their child intentionally. No book on Apologetics I know of offers such a gift.

Why do you need this book? We are losing our children to lies. The Church is experiencing a "Youth Exodus" at alarming rates and the ages of kids leaving is getting younger. Kid''s have questions and we need to be prepared to provide answers. If we don''t someone else will. And, we can''t guarantee who will be teaching our kids from day to day. Mama Bears are likely to be the most influential member of the household in whom the kids usually turn to for the most crucial of developmental needs. So, I stand with Mama Bear Apologetics calling all Mama Bears to take up the call to defend their cubs against cultural and social lies.

As a busy parent I have very little time to research and “educate” myself. But Mama Bear Apologetics has made it possible! With this introduction to many of today’s cultural challenges any parent (or grandparent/teacher/care giver) will FINALLY have the tools they need. In this conversational style book, we are given a brief history, current examples and then comparisons between the topic and the Bible. Love this book! This has quickly become one of my most favorite books to date! It is for moms... but really everyone will benefit from its analysis of the culture''s messages that are bombarding us. It''s very readable and yet extremely insightful. What I appreciate in this book is that they give a brief history of the topic, then walk you through a ROAR acronym (Recognize the messages gjven, Offer Discernment (the good messages/intents and the lies), Argue for a healthier approach, and then Reinforce through discussion, discipleship and prayer). This ROAR acronym really us a great way to work through each of the messages our culture throws at us. Here are some of my latest favorite quotes: "One of Christianity’s dirty little secrets that many inside (and outside) the church don’t know is that Christianity invites skepticism! We want our kids to be skeptical when someone tries to feed them an idea. Out of all the world’s religions, Christianity is the only one that has testable claims and invites rational inquiry. (Other religions consider it blasphemy to question their teachings.)" "Colossians 2: 8 commands us to “see to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy.” This is what a Mama Bear does— not only for herself, but also her cubs."
